Communications Security

As Confidential information circulates in networks, communications security has become a major concern for users and businesses. All seek to protect themselves against fraudulent use of their data or against malicious intrusions into computer systems. In addition, a multitude of viruses spread without the knowledge of users in downloaded files. Viruses can destroy documents or even cause the total loss of information stored in the machines. The current trend is to put in place access control mechanisms and secure protocols that provide several services: authentication, confidentiality, integrity, non-repudiation.

The Authentication involves asking a user to prove his or her identity (by providing a password or bio metric data, for example);

  • The confidentiality guarantees users that no data could be read and exploited by a malicious third party;
  • Integrity assures users that their data has not been unduly changed during transmission in the network;
  • Non-repudiation prevents a user from denying the reality of a data exchange.

Several security mechanisms are implemented in the data transmission to provide the above services. Mainly:

  • The encryption or encryption, which prevents the reading of data by unauthorized users;
  • The notarization of the exchanges, which keeps a trace of the exchange with a trusted third party, to prove later the very existence of the communication;
  • Jamming , which is a technique of permanent transmission of a flood of useless information to hide the important ones;
  • The digital signature , which calculates a block of control data from the identity of the user.

Whenever attempts are made to identify transformations in business and work, the computer worlds and sometimes those of the board are frequently invited. It is that it gives itself to see paradigmatically, a series of traits characteristic of modern productive work such as the organization in project, the immaterial nature of productions, the globalization of activities and markets, the role central knowledge and skills. In addition, work is frequently associated in sectors related to information technology and innovation and atypism.

Teleworking, flexible schedules, inter-companymobility of the intellectual workforce, fixed-term contracts, freelance, multisalariat, intrapreneurship would be common in the sector. Self-training as the intensification of work, the globalization and standardization of expertise and intangible knowledge, or new forms of business (virtual, networked, open source, etc.) would have met there earlier, and more than elsewhere. If this common finding is often exaggerated, sometimes erroneous to be qualified, it is because the myth of the start-up continues to obliterate the reality of large service companies. Computer and consulting activities are massively conducted in a more traditional organizational framework, as our field surveys have made it clear. it is that the myth of the start-up continues to obliterate the reality of large service companies.

What is the role of a data center?

The first notion to understand is that of servers, these computers without screen or keyboard that are solicited remotely to respond over the Internet. They return the pages of the net to the user's computer. Depending on the request, several servers are requested. Physically, the latter are stacked on top of each other in cabinets, installed in large rooms, called data centers. Their role is to quickly process the data, as fast as a blink of an eye, and store them securely, making sure that no one will steal or lose them after a breakdown or mishandling.

Do all companies use it?

This is less and less to host its own servers, especially for security reasons. Only large companies have their own data center. In France, the major companies, such as Total or BNP Paribas, manage them internally so as not to entrust the problem of private data to a third party. In general, they have at least 3 data centers, if only to triple the data as a security measure. But it is very expensive.

As the number of data exchanged grows, so do the data centers?

Between the number of Facebook users or the videos exchanged on YouTube, the data volumes are scary. We will especially witness the rise of large-scale data centers. They accounted of the total number and should rise by 2020. Those Google or Amazon, for example, who offer their services to all businesses. Their data centers are industrial, large hangars with containers full of servers.

What are the major issues?

Many large companies run their centers on renewable energy, not just for environmental reasons but in anticipation of the risk of increasing the cost of electricity. Google has a power generation license like EDF or installs data centers in cold countries, or near power plants to minimize consumption. They are very much ahead in how to best rationalize the energy consumed and the useful, knowing that much of it goes up in smoke in the cooling process.
